Illustration Samples

The following illustration samples were created in both Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The samples demonstrate an advanced-level understanding of the two graphics applications.

  • Photoshop artwork — This creation started out as a black and white photograph to which I applied color in Photoshop. The sandstone structures in the foreground were cut from photographs taken in Utah's Bryce Canyon National Park and positioned into the beach scene. The beach balls were given their glass-like appearance through the application of a process in Photoshop called the Gaussian Blur. Each ball was then pasted into the artwork to lend a bizarre effect.
  • Photoshop Logo — This artwork was created in Adobe Photoshop and demonstrates how you can work with vector shapes and layers to achieve some interesting results. The sine wave shape at the bottom of the artwork represents a knockout gradient layer that reveals another layer hidden beneath it. Other interesting effects are achieved in the text and in the round symbol located at the top of the page.
  • Signal System 7 illustration — This illustration was created in Adobe Illustrator and describes the out-of-band network system called Signal System 7.
  • VPN Network — This illustration was created in Macromedia Fireworks and describes a virtual private network (VPN).
  • Event illustration— This illustration is another example of using vector graphics in Photoshop. Specifically, you can use shape tools called clipping paths to create interesting objects in your artwork. You can also do some interesting things with vector-based type and layers of different colors. You can create great looking logos of this genre with Photoshop.
  • Gradient effects— The three colored forms — designed in Adobe Illustrator — show how you can use the gradient tool to render color and to achieve three-dimensional effects.

Flash Animation Samples

The animation samples were created in Macromedia Flash MX. Although basic in nature, the samples demonstrate a good understanding of the Flash MX animation concepts and a working knowledge of the more advanced Flash MX ActionScript language.

  • Animated Web Site— Created with both sound and animation, this Flash 5 home page sample demonstrates how animation can be incorporated into a Web site design. There are links to other pages that show how animation can also be applied to buttons.
  • Optical Network Animation— This sample is designed to show how an advanced telecommunications ring structure transports traffic over fiber optic cable to various locations at different bit rates. The concept here is that all-optical switching will someday replace optical-electrical-optical switching, enabling rates of transport that eclipse those achieved today. This sample would lend itself well to an eLearning project.
  • Sound Control — Sound is featured in this animation sample. You activate the volume control by moving the bar up or down. The animation demonstrates one simple way in which users can interact with a Web page.
  • Banners — This simple animation demonstrates a basic banner design.
  • Interactive Game — This simple game was created in Macromedia's Flash MX using ActionScripting. The left, right, up, and down keys comprise the "events" that create the action in this animation. Because the direction keys can be used separately, or in combination, the coding is complex.
