Paul Millard
I graduated from Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) with a
bachelors degree in English. After college, I began a three
and a half year tour of duty in the United States Navy,
where I was assigned to the destroyer, USS marshall (DD676),
during the Viet Nam war. I served as Communications Officer.
When I got out of the Navy, I lived for a year in Paris
studying French and German at the University of Paris in
preparation for a career in International Trade. Following
Paris, I attended the American Graduate School of International
Management in Glendale, Arizona, where I received a graduate
degree in Foreign Trade. Hired out of school by Celanese
Fibers Marketing Company of New York, NY, I began my career
representing Celanese in Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, and
Morocco.
I spent a total of fifteen years with Celanese in a variety
of marketing jobs, including Product Manager for PolarGard®—now
marketed by 3M®—, a nationally-advertised thermal
insulation product for the sleeping bag and outerwear markets.
I also managed a strategic planning group that produced
financial plans, market forecasts, and a variety of white
papers and position statements for evaluation by senior
management.
Faced with the massive economic shift that displaced U.S.
textile production with lower cost alternatives from developing
countries all over the world, I changed careers in 1990
to take advantage of the burgeoning technical products market.
I worked for five years at Desktop Products Inc., in Emeryville,
CA, as an Account Manager marketing a full range of computer
products to small and medium-sized companies in Northern
California.
In 1994, I moved to a Senior Account Manger's position
with ARM Systems, a manufacturer and marketer of computers
systems and networks. During the five years that I worked
for ARM Systems, I was responsible for garnering a large
portion of the computer needs of Santa Rosa Junior College,
Next Level Communications, and Lawrence Livermore Labs,
to name a few of my larger accounts.
In 2000, the computer manufacturing industry consolidated
at the expense of the smaller manufacturers like ARM Systems.
So, I deployed the excellent writing skills that I had developed
during my years with Celanese and began a career as a Technical
Writer. I started as a Senior Technical Writer with Sendmail,
Inc., in Emeryville, CA., then moved closer to home to accept
a position as a Senior Technical Writer with the telecommunications
giant, Alcatel, Inc., in Petaluma, CA.
Following the telecommunications meltdown, I adjusted once
again to market conditions and set out as a freelance Web
site developer and technical writer and have recently completed
an Intranet site project for a medium-sized company in New
Jersey.
I am married and live in Petaluma. I have three grown children,
all of whom live in the New York City metropolitan area.
